How you attack a urine stain on your mattress depends on whether it is a fresh stain or if it’s had a chance to dry. Whether old or new, you can remove or at least reduce the stain with a little work. For a fresh stain, wet the area with water. Then, use vinegar to help eliminate the unpleasant smell and kill any bacteria.

For fresh stains, always make sure you have soaked up as much of the urine as you can with a towel or rag first. The same applies to stains in baby clothes.
For old stains, wet the area, then rub some Borax into it. Be careful not to soak the stained area. You want it damp but not dripping wet. The best way to accomplish this is to use a wet rag or towel to rub on the stain. You can even use an old toothbrush if you have one handy.
Let the Borax penetrate the stain for a couple of hours and vacuum up the residue. The stain should be gone and the odor along with it.
In addition to vinegar and Borax, there are several other ways for how to remove urine stains from a mattress. If the stain is still damp, pour some baking soda liberally over the area and scrub it into the stain. Let it sit for a while and vacuum up the remains.
If the stain still lingers, spritz the area lightly with hydrogen peroxide. After it has had a chance to soak in, scrub a little more. Your urine stain should be gone and the area free of that nasty, musty urine smell.
While urine stains are certainly a problem, it is also important to know how to get mold out of a mattress, as well. Borax, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda can all help to tackle mold in a mattress. They will not only get rid of the stain, but also take care of the musty smell.
After treating any stain, let the mattress completely dry before you put any sheets and other bedding back on it. It is just as important to know how to dry a wet mattress with urine as it is to clean it.
Direct a fan onto the mattress or, if you can put the wet area in direct sunlight, that’s even better because sunlight can help bleach the fabric making any stain disappear even more. If you use Borax, you’ll want to vacuum it up after the mattress is dry. We also have a detailed article that talks more about how to get urine stains out of a mattress.
